IDT SCHOOL: Roller ski and safety

Separate safety rules have been developed for the use of roller skis. It started with nine points in 2015 and now Trygg Trafikk together with the Norwegian Ski Federation, the Norwegian Biathlon Association and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration have renewed the Rolling Disc Rules to a total of eleven points. The advice is intended to make it safer for roller skiers to travel among cars and other road users on the road.

 

  1. To train in traffic, you need to master roller skis well. This is especially true of braking and turning.
  2. All training and teaching must take place in places without vehicular traffic.
  3. Children under the age of 15 should not roller ski on busy roads.
  4. When using the roadway, you essentially walk on the right side of the road.
  5. Only train in places where you are well acquainted. Avoid heavy traffic, dangerous descents, bends and intersections.
  6. Give clear signals to other road users and make yourself understood in traffic.
  7. Dress visibly and always use reflectors. The training should take place in daylight.
  8. Always wear a helmet. Also, don't forget glasses that protect your eyes.
  9. Avoid music by ear to stay fully focused in traffic.
  10. Make sure your equipment is in working order and well maintained. Check pole studs and skis before use.
  11. Poles and pulleys ≥ diameter 30 mm are recommended during organized training, and it will be mandatory in roller skiing competitions from 01.07.22.


Roll safely in roller ski training!

Good safety is very important on roller skis and the right equipment is essential to ensure the best protection in the event of falls and accidents. Always wear an approved helmet and glasses that protect the eyes. Gloves, knee and elbow pads are also recommended to reduce the risk of injury if you fall. Wear clothing that provides good visibility on the road and always wear reflectors. Exercise a lot of balance, braking and cornering before venturing out onto busy roads or long-distance trips. In addition, it is a good habit to always check that your roller skis are as they should before start your training session.
